

You generally hear these poor monsters before you see them, and it really makes it all very creepy. No, the dread happens mostly through the amazing audio. There aren't any cinematic "jump scares," though, like modern video games where they would play like a super loud noise to scare you.

So I would say they're both scary for different reasons, but System Shock 2 significantly more, both visually and audibly. It can be stressful as you navigate the maze-like corridors and low-res graphics, the implications of SHODAN's experiments of mutations and cyborgs allude to very scary material, though you only get pixelated NPCs that don't move all that much, so it's more like you're hitting animated GIFs with pipes and ray guns.Ĭonversely, System Shock 2 has better graphics (even moreso with mods) that help you visualize the body horror of the infestation happening on the ship you're on. System Shock 1 graphics don't necessarily make it "scary" by modern standards.
