The text of the messages will stay, but the photos and docs will be deleted. Select all your messages (or older ones you choose), go to the Message Menu, and select “Remove Attachments”. Keep in mind this will delete attachments from the server as well, so make sure any that are important are saved. The biggest things that take up space are the photos and documents, not the messages myself.

The biggest features lost would be instant notifications when mail comes in (mostly), offline viewing, and built-in sharing options to email things from built-in programs on the Mac. If you want to, you can use a webmail interface (such as going to, ) exclusively for getting email with few features lost. There are no standards-keepers like for USB, so getting everyone to adopt to a change is beyond difficult. Email is a very 1990’s technology that is not easily updatable. Unfortunately, despite the changes, all the mail clients I’m aware of do not offer options to remove local copies. Despite the switch to IMAP email, which keeps the master copy on a server, many mail clients will keep copies local, and mirror what is on the server. That comes from the old days of POP mail when emails were only kept downloaded to devices. When you use the default “Mail” client on a Macintosh, it downloads all your email in all your accounts so that you can see and review them even if you’re offline.
